Cool Gas Gauge function / usage / reading

Hi all - thanks for taking a look. I have a 2016 QX80 and we took it on a trip to DC about 800+ miles. This is the first time I noticed that soon after a fill-up the gas gauge needle seemed to start to go down almost immediately, like I used about 1/8 of a tank after 10 to 15 mins of driving. (I don't have a fuel leak and I am used to filling up and seeing the gauge stay on full for a lot longer, much longer than 15 mins of driving.)

It seems like a calibration issue or a bad sensor / float or something and wanted to see if anyone else had or is aware of this problem before I bring it in. I know it is a big engine and not the best on mileage, but by watching the gauge you would think that you were loosing gas.

I thought this was very odd. When it reached about 1/2 tank, it seemed to actually stabilize and would stay there for much longer. I verified the mpg were accurate (computer report and driving distance) as I reset the trip indicator and got about 400 miles on a full tank with mostly highway driving avg 70 mph. The need is right about the tip of the red mark and the computer says there is avg mile range about 100.

Has anyone experienced something like this?

Thanks for your help

I have 2016 QX80 ... similar experiences. This gauge is not very linear in how it shows gas consumption. In fact, I would suggest the design is poor and more concerned with the bottom 1/8th of a tank accuracy. I don't let it get down that far just to be safe. I'm getting around 13 mpg on average (blend of city and highway) and peaks to 18 mpg on long highway trips

I think some people even go as far as not letting their tank go below 2/8th of a tank since that allows you to be very generous with it. If you happen to be stopped on a slope at least then there's no need to worry. On a 1/8th you might be pushing it.

I have a 2016 QX80 with the same issue. Typically 40 miles or so and it's down to 3/4 tank. Mine also rockets downward to 1/2 where it seems to slow down and become more accurate. I've talked to the dealer who said there is not fix. They referred me to Inifiniti Consumer affairs. They don't seem to know much of anything. Has anyone had any luck with a dealer who has a fix?

Replying to my own post. Infiniti Consumer Affairs opened a case for this so they can look at it when I take the car in for its next service. If you're experiencing a problem, I urge you to call them so they fix this.

For anyone experiencing this problem, a service bulletin issued in late July addressing this. The gauge will be replaced.

Wanted to let you all know that I took my QX80 in on Monday for the 2G to 3G upgrade and asked them to look at the gas gauge issue. I even gave them the technical bulletin (thanks, Sawdust!). I made sure that I filled up that morning. Then drove 18 miles to the dealer and it had already dropped below full. They took a look, determined that there was a problem and ordered the parts. I'll take it back in and let everyone know the results as soon as it is complete.

Also, FYI, I've been poking around the Club Armada forums and it appears that some people are reporting similar issues with the new Armadas. I guess Nissan/Infiniti didn't catch the issue before the early run of 2017 Armadas.

When I get my 5000 miles service they will look at my gauge ... I mentioned it when they did my 2G to 3G upgrade. Service said there is a protocol they need to follow to electronically check the gauge and replace under warranty if necessary. They have not done many to date.
