Hi experts I need your help I recently seen a 2016 Infiniti QX80 Limited with around 87k miles for $32,990 at one of the local dealerships in Minnesota.

It has 2 Previous owners, No Accidents, Clean Carfax but it has the following listed by dealership.

** NEW $20,000 ENGINE INSTALLED HERE AT 85,000 MILES , NEW TIRES, NEW REAR SUSPENSION COMPRESSOR INSTALLED, 2 KEYS, HEADPHONES AND DVD REMOTE, NEW MSRP OVER $90,000. Recent Arrival!

I’m not sure if new or rebuilt engine was added but I will find out prior to my buying.
The price of the engine seems very high to me, i’m not sure I want to buy a vehicle that has such a high start price for parts when then wear out.

Please give some direction on should I buy or walk away.
Thank you

A factory new engine installed is $23K, a rebuilt or used engine should be half that. Definitely run that VIN and find out why it needed a new engine. See if it comes with a good warranty and check with your insurance, some won’t cover a salvage title or rebuild. If it’s a reliable shop with good reviews that got a good engine and did a good install, it’ll run forever if you take care of it.

Thank you 123Tiffany I’ll definitely ask more questions and verify written docs before going forward with the purchase. It did sound good but I have not been able to verify the if rhe engine is really New under a good warranty. I don want to make a purchase that ends up need maintenance ever time I turn around. Thanks again.

I personally would not purchase a vehicle like that. It is an older, high mileage vehicle and the price does not look that great. It is true that engine replacement cost is very high so I get the dealership wants to recover the cost of rebuilding the engine. But rebuilding an engine is such a complex task and so many things could go wrong, and you may not know for many months.

Unless you get a warranty in writing for year(s) and more attractive price I would not consider this car. Its one thing if your existing vehicle has a major issue and requires an engine rebuild. This way you typically get good warranty from the shop that does the work. But ask yourself why someone sold the vehicle that needed the engine rebuild...in my opinion simply to not deal with this risk.

How does the frame look like? you say the vehicle is in Minnesota, does it look ok? 87k miles in Minnesota can result in some serious frame rust. There are so many other options with newer and less mileage vehicles for less money, that have never seen salt...
