2023 Infiniti QX80 Loud Engine Fan Sound

Hi All,

I just leased a brand new ‘23 QX80 last month and the truck has now about 1k miles on it. I have noticed that the engine fan makes very loud sound and it keeps doing that very frequently now. I understand it’s a V8 and the engine fan would start up loud when the car is started up but it keeps making that noise even while I’m driving and does not go away. Also, when that happens, the RPM draws a lot of power and it sounds like the engine is being stretched too hard in a low gear. Any feedback as to what might be causing this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Love the truck but haven’t really been able to enjoy it due to this engine sound issue that’s very bothersome and makes it sound like a really old truck with a worn-out engine.

This is completely normal. I am on my 3rd one and ever single one makes this noise. I suspect QX80 engine control system activates the fan at full speed before the all engine parameters are checked out and it determines the fan is not required. There are ~10 parameters that feed ECM to determine the fan speed. Interestingly in this logic it uses cooling fan speed parameter and compares to other parameters (such as coolant temp, engine speed, vehicle speed, A/C status etc) to determine and adjust fan speed. Some need to be stabilized before the reading is valid and fan speed is then adjusted.

Like you said, it is a truck and it reminds you about it every time you start it :).
The only advice I can provide is that I found out that if idle for a short period of time after the engine start the fan stops and doesn't come on when I start driving. This minimizes the time the fan is "noisy".

I do understand the sound when started up, but the same sound coming every 4-5 minutes is what’s bothering me. Even when I’m just cruising at low speeds (20-30 mph), the loud fan starts up. Temp needle shows everything normal, but the fan comes on full speed and the RPM gauge goes wild. And when the fan comes on, it wouldn’t accelerate because the RPM needle is already high. Is there some way they could electronically fix it? I really hope they do.
This does not sound normal. Unless you are cruising in some very hot location. Something is driving ECU to activate the fan at full speed. They need to connect Consult and look for all the inputs to ECU for the fan speed. They can see all that in real time. I would think they can figure it out. If the dealer tells you this is normal ask them to drive with you, back to back, with any other vehicle they have on the lot and see if this happens.
Thank you for your responses. Nowhere hot at all, I’m on the East coast and the temp is in 50’s-60’s. I am planning to take it to the dealership. When I told them over the phone about the problem, they said they have never heard about it before. Is it something that could be remotely fixed if it’s only ECU related? My work schedule is very tight these days and for that reason, I haven’t been able to make it to the dealership. It would make my life very easy if it’s something that could be remotely diagnosed/fixed. Thanks again.
Did you ever find out what the problem was?

Took it to the dealership and they ran the diagnostic on my truck - turns out the IPDM module is not functioning properly and it needs to be changed. Currently, it’s on back-order since the module required a design upgrade to fix the issue. So they told me they will call me back as soon as they get the part and swap it out. They told me that I can drive the truck in the meantime and this loud fan noise is not detrimental to the engine or the vehicle itself. So now I’m just waiting for the part to be available.
Just took my 2022 QX80 to the dealership with yhe exact same issue. They tell me it is the fan clutch that is defective and need to be replaced. Fan clutch engages too often, with a loud airplane engine sound as I loose power to accelerate. Hope this helps.

I had a similar problem and the dealership replaced the fan clutch. In the documentation they called it "coupling fan". I got it changed today only so will know if this is resolved driving it next few days.
