Fuel Economy while Towing?

4691 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  martinbrown2892
I am courious on two things:

1. If anyone will reply on this thread
2. If anyone took the time to note their fuel economy while pulling a trailer that is more than 4,500 pounds.

I am trying to figure out my fuel cost for towing my camping trailer (approx 5,000 pounds). Wondering if I leave the QX80 at home and take my older GMC Yukon Denali....

Cheers!

Hi Sloner,

1. If anyone will reply on this thread
Yes

2. If anyone took the time to note their fuel economy while pulling a trailer that is more than 4,500 pounds.
Yes

For the past two years, I've been towing an open deck car trailer to various race tracks.
Trailer: 1600 lbs
Car: 3600 lbs
Extra set of wheels on the tire rack: 200 lbs
Tools and cargo in the car: 200 lbs

So that's about 5600 lbs (most likely a bit more), plus a crap load of cargo in the back of the truck. Mileage is going to vary greatly on route and traffic.
I recorded the following numbers after each fill-up:
12.70 Tow to PMP
15.00 Tow to PMP
13.80 Tow from PMP

10.80 Tow to WGI
14.30 Tow to WGI - All highway
12.40 Tow from WGI

13.10 Tow to NJMP
13.60 Tow to NJMP
11.90 Tow from NJMP
11.70 Tow from NJMP

12.20 Tow to WGI
15.90 Tow from WGI - All highway
13.10 Tow from WGI

12.40 Tow from WGI
